⚠️ REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED IN ADVANCE

You’ll need two quick registrations before test day - DO THIS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE IN CASE THERE ARE CHALLENGES

STEP 1 – Create an FCC CORES Account

(If you don’t already have one)

👉 Create account here:
https://apps2.fcc.gov/fccUserReg/pages/createAccount.htm

STEP 2 – Get Your FRN (FCC Registration Number)

Log into CORES and select “Register New FRN”

👉 Log in here:
https://apps.fcc.gov/cores/userLogin.do

What’s Required to Get an FRN (FCC Registration Number)

You get an FRN by creating an FCC CORES account. The FCC needs enough information to:

Uniquely identify you
Contact you
Associate fees and licenses correctly

✅ Required Information

1. Legal Name

First and last name (must match ID reasonably well)

2. Email Address

Used for:
Account verification
Official FCC notices
Password recovery

3. Username & Password

For logging into CORES

🔐 Identity Verification (One of the following)

The FCC will ask for ONE of these to verify identity:

Social Security Number (SSN)
or
FCC Registration Number (if you already have one)

👉 Important reassurance:

The FCC does not store or display your SSN publicly.

It’s used only once to verify identity and prevent duplicate FRNs.

If someone already has an FRN, they do not need to re-enter SSN.

🏠 Address Information

Mailing address (can be a home address)
City, state, ZIP

This is used for:

License records
Legal notices (rare, but required)

❌ What Is Not Required

No background check
No fingerprinting
No financial history
No test score or exam proof at this stage
No payment to create the FRN

(You pay after you pass the exam and apply the license.)

🧒 For Minors

A parent or guardian can help create the CORES account
Many minors are licensed; this is routine

🧭 Why the FCC Requires This

Prevents duplicate identities
Ensures correct fee handling
Keeps the public license database accurate

Your call sign becomes public — your SSN does not.

Bottom Line (Plain English)

To get an FRN, the FCC needs:

Who you are
How to contact you
Proof you’re a unique person

That’s it.

STEP 3 – Register for the Exam Session

(You’ll need your FRN)

👉 Register here:

📖 STUDYING (Highly Recommended)

Pass rates are 80%+ for people who study even a little.

Suggested prep:
• 15–30 minutes a day
• For a few days before the test

⭐ BONUS OPPORTUNITY

If you pass the Technician exam, you may attempt:
General (free, same day)
Amateur Extra (also free)

No pressure—go as far as you want.

🧭 FINAL WORD

The test is the hardest part.
The license is a license to learn.

This isn’t flying an airplane—no one crashes if you make a mistake.
Hams are made on the air, not on the test.

We’re all amateurs.
Welcome to the club. 📡\
